Below is a list of the projects currently being funded by the Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Projects at the top of the list are those most recently agreed by the Management Committee.

Conservatory Roof Blinds at Burnley £2,600.00

proj The conservatory at Burnley General Hospital is used for clinical sessions with the Clinical Psychologist and Breast Care nurses as well as other health care professionals. It can become unbearably hot with significant glare from the sun. As no alternative space is available provision of blinds will make the area much more comfortable.

Furniture and Fittings for Breast Screening Unit at Burnley £3,065.65

proj Funding has been agreed to provide seating for the counselling room, a beverage system, flat screen TV and stand and pictures for the new Breast Screening Unit at Burnley General Hospital.

Refurbishment of Hostel Accommodation at Blackpool £30,210.00

proj Refurbishment of 3 bedroom property obtained by Blackpool, Fylde & The Wyre Trust to provide hostel style accommodation for leukaemia patients and their families from across the region.

Membership of the UK Oncology Nursing Society £1,760.00

proj Group membership of the UK Oncology Nursing Society for representaties from the four Trusts and delegate fees for eight representatives to the National Conference.

Complementary Therapies at Lancaster & Barrow £19,652.00

proj Rosemere will continue to pay for complementary therapies for patients at both Barrow and Lancaster hospitals.

Oncology Emergency Campaign, £21,000

proj A DVD, information pack and PR campaign to highlight early warning signs of deterioration in the health of chemotherapy patients, aimed at front line health professionals in the community.  The campaign will be launched in September 2010 and rolled out across the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network.

Ultrasound Machine £11,500

proj To allow chemotherapy access in the upper arm rather than in the hand so that it is more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing for the patient and less prone to infection.

Complementary Therapies £6,800

proj To give all chemotherapy patients at the Cancer Centre access to 6 free sessions of reflexology, massage or aromatherapy during their treatment.  Rosemere also funds this service in the Windmill Unit at Blackpool and the Oncology Units at Lancaster and Barrow.

Radiotherapy Skin Study £10,000

proj To fund a staff member to write up, present and disseminate the findings of an extensive study into the minimisation of skin irritation during radiotherapy.  It is hoped that this work will become the basis of a national protocol.

proj To aid the comfort of bed bound radiotherapy patients during transfer from ward or ambulance to the treatment bed.

proj To make the stay of radiotherapy patients from South Cumbria and East Lancashire more bearable.

Third Year BSc Student Fees £9,700

proj To enable an outstanding student, currently working full time as a Radiotherapy Assistant in addition to their studies, to complete their training and become a Therapy Radiographer.   Despite a national and international shortage of Radiotherapists, there is only one university in the UK offering this conversion qualification and currently there is no financial support available through the NHS.  This year’s student will be the third one supported by Rosemere in this way  -  both previous candidates are now valued members of the Radiotherapy team in the Cancer Centre at Preston.

proj Rosemere’s support for this annual regional conference will provide an opportunity for clinical staff at all levels to learn of local and national developments in cancer research.

proj Funding for 8 patients from across the region to attend and feed back to local support groups in their areas.

Neuro-oncology Study Day £1,000

proj Support for a study day for cancer nurse specialists from across the cancer network on the disease pathway, treatment options and outcomes for patients with brain tumours.

Endobronchial Ultrasound Bronchoscope £52,400

proj The funding of an additional scope by the Rosemere Cancer Foundation will facilitate the training of additional practitioners in the use of cutting edge techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer patients.

Annual Network Colo-Rectal Cancer Meeting £2,250

proj Funding from Rosemere will enable 15 cancer nurse specialists to attend this educational event for colo-rectal cancer practitioners from across the region.

proj Research in conjunction with UCLAN into the possible beneficial effects of ACE inhibitors on scarring following breast reconstruction.  £7,900
 
Research in conjunction with UCLAN into the chemosensitivity of Glioma cells to help refine treatment of the most common form of brain tumour.  £2,929

proj Prostate cancer research in conjunction with Lancaster University to improve screening, diagnosis and treatment.  Funding over 3 years  £40,500.
Breast cancer research in conjunction with Lancaster University to improve the screening and detection of hormonal breast cancers.  Funding over 3 years £49,950.

proj Start up funds over 2 years to establish administrative support for clinical trials to help build local access to national and international trials, bringing the most advanced treatment to patients from Lancashire and South Cumbria at the earliest opportunity.
